SBB – Departure Signal

Fine Scale reproduction of an SBB departure signal, used at Swiss stations to provide the driver with the train’s departure authorisation. The signal reproduces the characteristic illuminated aspect formed by one white light and one green light, using two 0402 micro LEDs.

This type of signal can be installed alongside different signalling configurations. For this reason, the set includes one photo-etched brass sheet with two different supports: one designed for installation on System N signals and another for System L signals. The required support must be cut from the sheet, assembled and fixed with instant adhesive before carrying out the electrical connections.

The signal housing is made from high-quality 3D-printed plastic, while the supports are made from photo-etched brass. Its dimensions are 3 × 3 × 1.5 mm and it is designed for N scale (1:160).

The resistors and diode are supplied but not soldered, as they must be installed after the signal has been fixed to its support. Without the resistors installed, the micro LEDs must not be connected to more than 2 V. Once the supplied components have been soldered, the signal can operate at 16 V DC.

Where is this signal used?

The departure signal is mainly used at stations and platforms to provide a visual departure authorisation. In Swiss railway operation, this authorisation can only be given once the necessary permission for the train to depart has already been granted.

Thanks to the two supports included, the model can be integrated into installations equipped with either System N or System L, allowing different SBB signalling configurations to be reproduced.
